Call For Papers para el nº 35-2027: Arquitectos en la gran pantalla: Géneros, representaciones e identidades
El retrato de Adrien Brody como el arquitecto Laszlo Toth en The Brutalist (Brady Corbet, 2024), junto con el de César Catilina, interpretado por Adam Driver en Megalópolis (1949), de Francis Ford Coppola, a principios del mismo año, sumaban dos nuevas incorporaciones al linaje de interpretaciones cinematográficas de la figura del arquitecto construidas a la sombra de El Manantial (1949), de King Vidor. La traducción de Vidor del Howard Roark descrito por Ayn Rand, personaje fuertemente inspirado en Frank Lloyd Wright e interpretado con una masculinidad hiperbólica, y más que un poco tóxica, por Gary Cooper, se inscribía en la tradición de retratar al arquitecto como un heroico y solitario genio-creador.
Si bien no había sido el primero en llegar a la pantalla, el Roark de Cooper se apoderaría rápidamente del imaginario colectivo, transformándose, rápidamente, en la representación definitiva del arquitecto, tanto en lo cinematográfico como en la cultura popular en general. Hombre, blanco y heterosexual, obsesivo visionario de dimensiones casi míticas, reflejaba, aumentada, la imagen que del arquitecto estaban construyendo por igual los medios arquitectónicos y la historiografía. Así, el dudoso modelo de Roark sería inmediatamente adoptado por la profesión y se convertiría en una duradera, por más cuestionable que fuera, fuente de inspiración tanto para arquitectos en ciernes como para profesionales en ejercicio…

Call for Papers nº 35-2027: Architects on the Silver Screen: Genders, Representations, Identities
Adrien Brody’s portrayal of architect Laszlo Toth in Brady Corbet’s 2024 The Brutalist, together with Adam Driver’s Cesar Catilina in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, earlier that year, added two new entries in a lineage of filmic representations of the architect built in the shadow of King Vidor’s The Fountainhead (1949). Vidor’s translation of Ayn Rand’s Howard Roark, a character heavily modelled on Frank Lloyd Wright, played with hyperbolic, and more than a little toxic masculinity by Gary Cooper, belonged in the tradition of the architect as a lone, heroic genius-creator.
While not the first, Cooper’s Roark rapidly permeated the collective imagination, becoming the ultimate representation of the architect, filmic or otherwise. A white, heterosexual male, an obsessive visionary of almost mythical stature, Roark mirrored the self-image of architects as constructed by architectural media and historiography alike, being immediately embraced by the profession, and becoming an enduring –if questionable– source of inspiration for both students and practising architects. Cinema has helped perpetuate this stereotypical vision, contributing many variations on it, be it William Holden’s McDonald Walling in Executive Suite (Robert Wise, 1954), Kirk Douglas’s Larry Coe in Strangers when we meet (Richard Quine, 1960), Richard Gere’s Vincent Eastman in Intersection (Mark Rydell, 1994), or James Frame’s Miles Moss in The Architect (Jonathan Parker, 2016)…

The journal encourages contributions in areas such as the conjunction of study, analysis, knowledge, history and reflections about Cinema and Photography. Fotocinema explores interdisciplinary schools of thought in the present state of scholarship.
